Devlog pt.0

Hello everyone, this is part zero of my devlog. Why part 0? Because I haven't done anything yet  and this is for setting my goals and expectations to become a developer. I also made a video version of it, you can watch it below.

So, who am I? I am currently working as a programmer, and I kinda don’t like it. I am sick of making boring enterprise applications that no one uses and the only thing that I want to programm is games. I know that I am hardly unique and there are plenty of other people like that, but I am fully aware of that and always have a backup plan- I can go back to programming boring stuff again. Just need to finish something to show that I have done things.

First of all I need to check where I am at, what are my starting positions? I have finished a couple of simple games for game jams which you can see in my itch.io page and I have some unfinished projects that I need to finish.

So, I have a simple match3 game where you have a minute to get the most points by matching tiles inspired by Bejeweled Blitz.. This game was intended as an exercise in mobile gaming. Can I make a casual mobile game? How can I market it for free/ with a small amount of funds? What works and what not?

Currently the game is in half finished state- the basics are there, but it’s not what can be called release ready.  As you can see, graphics are passable, but definitely needs improvement. There are no sounds or floating numbers. These are the things to be done before releasing it. Is there a place for a simple match3 game without battles with other players, levels and upgrades like GardenScapes or Candy Crush?

Also I found that trying to build a popular game that I don’t like as much is very hard- it drags twice as much. Releasing a game in a genre you like is hard, because at the end of the day you will start to hate your game and will have no passion to push the last bits, but a game you don’t like? What are solutions for this?

Maybe find someone who really likes casual games, make him/her your imaginary CEO and make a game for them? Maybe that could help? No idea. It feels more like a job, not a hobby for now, but I guess I have to release it to see what will happen.

The other game that I am working on is dungeon crawler, inspired by mobile game Grim Quest. In this game you explore dungeons, find treasures, have multiple events and then return to town, where you

There is not much done in programming front, It is based on unity’s Roguelike project  and started building the game on it. just added a fog.

Currently my plans are to build game onmobile markets and then build it for desktop.

As for youtube, my current plan is to record devlog every week to keep me on the track and organized. I don’t know how long I could do, but I have a feeling that I need to try.
